Who would’ve thought that something that just pulled dirt off the floor would have such a HUGE range in prices! You have the super cheap “just get you though” vacuums for as low as under $50, and then you have vacuums from places like Kirby that are closer to $2,000. By the way, if anyone every knocks on your front door and says, “Hey, we just came from your neighbor Joe’s house and he told us that you might be interested in having a free carpet cleaning”… trust me, just say no. 🙂
In the mid-price range is the Dyson. I have had my eye on a Dyson Vacuum Cleaner for years. They come with a fairly high price tag (for me), and it just hasn’t been something we could or would buy without saving up for many months.
But then the refurbished ones (which have the same warranty as the brand new ones) went on sale on Woot the other day and I convinced Ryan to to get me the Dyson DC25 All Floors Ball Vacuum (pretty much in lieu of any other Christmas presents) and I can’t wait to get it!
I’ve heard amazing things about the Dyson and pretty much everyone I have heard from says that it IS WORTH IT! {I sure hope they are right!}
So what about you guys? Do you think the price tag of the Dyson is worth it? Is there another vacuum that you have that you love?
Emily says
I have the one in the photo and it’s FAB!!! I love that it works 100% of the time on hard surfaces.
Lisa says
Love my dyson!
Erica says
I have a Dyson animal that I’ve had for close to 10 years and I absolutely love it!! Definitely worth the money!
Kristan says
I love my Dyson Animal! It picks up all the pet hair. Not so wild about sweeping the stairs with it though.
Dana says
I love my Dyson and have talked it up so much that 2 other people have bought them. It is so worth it if you have pets. Very powerful vacuum.
Kristi says
LG LUV400T – recommend it over Dyson any day. Top of the line LG and that thing rocks. It’s worth the investment. 🙂
Lesley says
I had a Dyson when I lived in the UK but I haven’t bought one since moving over here, they are so expensive, but especially GREAT if you have pets!
Brandi says
I LOVE my Euro-Pro Infinity! I’ve had it 3 years and wouldn’t trade it for the world. My husband dismantles it about every three months and cleans all the filters and thats the only maintenance we’ve done. It’s still running like the day I bought it and much like the more expensive Dyson, it’s guaranteed to never lose suction.
Elizabeth says
LOVE my Dyson, can’t believe how much dirt we have in our house each time I vacuum – like the commercial says downside is empting your bin more often and it’s not because the bin is small it just sucks up a lot.
Bri says
Y’know, I have a cheaper one…a Bissell bagless. It works just fine for us, and it’s lasted us over 3 years now. I tried out a Dyson ball vacuum the other day because that’s what they have at the Playgroup I volunteer for on post, and I had to clean up afterwards. It maneuvers like you would not believe, which was awesome…but it barely picked anything up off the rugs. It was pretty disappointing for a vacuum that expensive! I’ll stick with my cheapo that sucks, and skip the expensive model that doesn’t. lol
Kylie says
My dyson was worth every single penny!!!
Emily says
dyson is sooo worth it!! now their bladeless fans I dont think are. but the vacuums yes!
Sara says
I have dyson and love it. Would only buy a dyson from now on. I loved mine so much my mom got one too. We had an Oreck and hated it.
Kelly says
Love my Dyson
Lisa says
You won’t regret it. I have had a Dyson since Mother’s Day 2005 and absolutely love it. I have never had any problems with mine and if you think your floors are clean wait until you use it the first time and see how much it picks up! It is definitely a good investment.
Rose says
NO WAY!
Shanda says
I love my dyson. I wont let anyone else use it!
Missy says
I love my Rainbow vacuum! It rocks!
Charlene says
Oreck and central vac hands down.
Catherine says
We had two vacuum cleaners and new carpet, and horrible allergies with constant headaches…got the dyson and ONE use and everything was 99% better.
Nicole says
Dyson is the best one I have ever owned! Picks up everything, works on hard surfaces and even flufffs my carpet making it look new again 🙂
Shelley says
Yes!! Love my dyson & my dyson hand held!
Krystal says
Got a Shark Professional about a month ago, and absolutely love it!! It does carpet, has a pet attachment, and a hard surface microfiber attachment. It also has a detachable canister that is wonderful for stairs and things that are up high. It got better reviews than the Dyson and is more than half the price at WalMart and Amazon!! It is completely maintenance free and bag-less. It has such strong suction that it even has a dial to turn down the suction… LOVE IT!!!
Tyeesha says
LOVE my Dyson!!!! It is 7 years old, and the belt has finally worn down…after 7 years….yep, can’t complain!!
Michelle says
I have a bissel poret hair eraser… Works magic in my house of 3 animals!
Sue says
Believe it or not, my Shark is fantastic. My sister has a Dyson and we’ve tested them together and agree that they are super comparable. My Shark was less than $200. I have 2 Shih-tzus, 2 cats and 3 kids and it has NEVER failed me. Same design as the Dyson without the ball (although they make one).
Angie says
I have had my same Dyson DC14 Animal (the original Animal) since 2005 & I love that thing!!! I would drop the money again for it right now if it were to die. It is the most usable, easiest to unclog & most rebuildable machine I have ever had. We have had to order a few new pcs to it & it’s as simple as calling the 1-800 number on the machine.
Kelli says
need something that can conquer black dog hair. lots. of. black. dog. hair. { sigh } suggestions welcome!
Hilary says
Animal Dyson!
Ariel says
I’ve never used a Dyson, however my Shark Navigator is awesome… 150$ in most major stores..
Amy says
i love my eureka airspeed
Lindsey says
I LOVE my Shark..it’s great for homes with pets… the suction is amazing. I would recommend it 200%.
Lindsey says
It works on hardwood also and has an extra long hose attachment which is awesome : )
Alison says
I love my Dyson. I have the canister version, not the upright, because that is what I prefer. It is heads and tails above any other vacuum I have ever had! I have 2 large dogs (one lab and one german shepherd), a welsh corgi dog, a cat, and a mechanic husband. It is so easy to use and clean. So worth the money.
Elizabeth says
I forgot to mention I have the original animal and have had it about 5 years, we have a German Shepherd that sheds like MAD and that Dyson was so worth it – I bought mine at Kohl’s w/30% off. Kohls has their sale again starting tomorrow and you can buy online for 30% off with promo code – saveatkohls
Tandi says
Love my Dyson!
Lisa says
I would check Consumer Reports. When I bought my vacuum 5 years ago, they thought Dyson was overpriced and not so great. I bought a Kenmore on theri recommendation, have had it for 5 years and it is the best vacuum I have ever owned. It was $300 less than a Dyson. M MIL has had 3 Dysons, she has a love/hate relationship with them.
Chrissy says
I have had a Riccar for twelve years…it is a great vacuum. Unlike most, it has metal parts in the engine so it can be fixed instead of simply becoming trash. Also, it is made in the USA. 😉
Kim says
HATE Oreck!!’
Melody says
I have a Eureka that I paid no more than $50 for and LOVE it! Its a bagless and does a great job even after two years!
Minna says
I hate my rainbow. With a passion. I wish I had a Dyson.
Lisa says
We have a dyson animal and love how it picks Up all the pet fur from the cat and two dogs we have!
Gina says
A friend gave me her spare (!) Dyson animal vac … I had never heard of a Dyson before that. I fell in love instantly. I’ve got a dog and around 10 cats, so when I say the Dyson gets ALL the fur and dirt out of my carpet, I mean it!
Kerry says
Dyson Animal Ball. Will never live without it again!
Jessica says
I just bought the Dyson dc28..pet one…I have never been a fan of paying so much for a vacumm, however I love Orecks…but when I saw the Dyson I bought on clearance at Target for $158 instead of the original $699 I bought it…not light like the oreck, does suction very well….the hose isn’t that great…I love my Oreck 5lb one still, but doesn’t have the hose….stick with an affordable one.
Beth bontrager says
definetly a dyson is the best. I have 1 & I clean at 4 houses that have 1. The vey best
Debbie says
I love my Dyson. I got a really good deal on it at Target when I purchased it last year.
Jackie says
I bought a Dyson after moving into our brand new home and I do not regret it at all. It’s the first brand new vacuum I’ve ever had, though, so I can’t really compare it to anything, except to say that it beats to death all the other used vacuums and new ones my parents ever bought (mainly hoovers) while growing up!
Jessica says
I’ve used a Dyson, but not owned one. I LOVE my SHARK Navigator! For the price, you can’t beat it!
Jennifer says
I had a hoover windtunnel and I really liked it, but I hated buying bags all the time. Where I live I was paying around $5 for 3 bags and that was getting old. So when it died (after almost 10 yrs) I decided to go with bagless and I went with a Dyson b/c so many of my friends were recommending it. I agree that it has great suction and is super for getting up pet hair and dirt out of your carpet. My one complaint with it is that it has a very small tube and it only picks up really tiny stuff. Plus it seems like I am always getting something stuck in it, like dog food or wrappers. I have 3 kids that don’t just drop dirt…. I feel like I spend as much time bent over picking things up that are either too big or I am afraid will get caught, then I do actually vacuuming. A new phrase in our house is “get the floor vacuum ready” which is code for my kids to run around and pick up all the pieces that are too big for the Dyson to get. Other than that it really is a powerful vacuum, and it is very light weight so it is easy to carry up stairs.
Andrea says
I wish I could afford a Dyson but since I can’t I bought a DirtDevil Breeze at Target for around $35 it is very loud but does the best job of any vacuum I’ve ever owned.
Janet says
I always wondered if a Dyson was worth the money. I had a windtunnel and I forget what my last vacuum was. I just bought a refurb Dyson and absolutely love it. Although I didn’t pay full price, I now know I would.
Michele says
I love my dyson! I’ve had it for 7+ years. It was the first vacuum that I haven’t broken yet. All the other ones the motor burned out or stop picking stuff up. I would recommend it and I would definitely buy it again!
Katlynn says
I had an Oreck that I absolutely loved and thought was the best vac ever. But then I got a Dyson! I cleaned one room with the Oreck…looked spotless…then used the Dyson. The Dyson bin was nearly ‘full’ when I finished, which goes to show you can’t always ‘see’ clean. My house really has never been cleaner and my dust allergies have been gone for 2 years. So…I bought another Dyson. 🙂 You truly won’t regret it.
Katlynn says
Oh, I picked up both my Dyson’s on woot – 2 for the price of 1. Had them for 5 and 3 years – and they still work amazing.
Janet says
I would lose my husband before I lose my Dyson.
a says
I have a Dyson and it doesn’t really work any better than my 20 year old electrolux. And the cord is shorter. It’s OK, but I don’t think it’s really worth the price. But if you can get it cheap…it’s a decent vacuum.
Kristen says
I would recommend dyson! I was replacing vacuums almost every 6 months ( we vacuum a lot) and I was sick of paying for a crappy one so we got a Dyson about 4 years ago and haven’t ever had a problem with it. Oh and we bought it at Bed Bath and beyond because of their great return policy. As long as you have the receipt and the box you can return it no matter how long you have had it. I now buy all my small appliances there! Look out for 20% off coupons too that saved me $90 when I bought the dyson.
Tami Burd says
Thank you Kristen for that valuable hint! I will file that one in my brain under – “Remember this the next small appliance purchase!”
Robyn says
I have had so many vacuums and each one has burnt up between teens hair and pet hair. I have had my Dyson now for almost 3 years and wouldn’t trade it for anything. By far the best vacuum I have ever owned. I just wish someone would make one that doesn’t get hair trapped in the roller cause I still need to clean it all the time.
Lynda Ruiz says
But what about emptying it? I have heard the bagless vacuums leave dust residue in the process of emptying unless you go outside to empty it. Comments? I have also heard filters and belts are very expensive, We have 7 indoor cats, dogs and bunny, so between hair and litter I need something good and so far have preferred the containment factor of a bag.
Ti says
To empty the dyson canister you just hold it over the trash & push a button. The bottom opens up and all the yuck falls out. We have lots of furry pets too & I give it a shake it to get the clumps out. There is some dust, but it is directed into the trash.
Wendy says
Love my Dyson
Sue says
I agree, Robyn! Love my Dyson, too..even after 10+ years! But…the hair on the the roller is a pain..I think thats the only thing I could complain about with them…
Mary says
I have the Dyson with the Power head designed especially for Pets. I LOVE it. It was quite pricey but SOOOO worth it.
Meredith says
I have the first ever 1943 version Hoover vacuum. My friend gave me his grandmas when she passed away. It’s stainless steel. It weighs about 50 pounds. It is a vacuum and an exercise machine!
Meredith says
and it still works!

Shark navigator is the only way to go.

I love my Dyson 🙂

I have had 2 Dysons and now have a Shark and I would say the Shark is my FAVORITE! 🙂 The 1st Dyson was 3 years old when it started falling apart and it was before the 5 year warranties were offered, so I called for replacement parts and was quoted OVER $200! No thank you. For a while I used an older Oreck from my fil, and it was ok, but my mil gave me her almost brand new Dyson because she didn’t like it. Well, I had it a month or two and the hose started cracking, it would get clogged etc, so I called Dyson and they VOIDED the warranty because evidentally my mil had registered it and since I wasn’t her, they said the warranty was no good. So it broke and I took it in to get a quote at a repair shop and was quoted $200 – no thanks. I bought my Shark at Sam’s in January for only $149 with a 7 year warranty and it is worth every penny and more! 🙂
Melissa says
I LOVE my Dyson! I bought mine as a QVC special a while back with TONS of extra attachments (which I love using – makes me feel like a domestic goddess) and I have to say I think it was the best $$ I have ever spent for a “home appliance” item. I have the canister style b/c of the draw to clean hardwoods (which our house is over 75% hardwoods or tile) and it is so easy to use and cleans so well. The day mine came, I cleaned a rug that I had just vacuumed the day before with my Bissell Wind Tunnel. I had to empty the canister half-way through the rug!! Ugh!! Anyway, I say a Dyson is Totally Worth It!
Laurel says
Will never own anything other than a Dyson! It’s one of my most prized possessions!!!
Tami Burd says
I have 2 Newfoundland dogs and a flat-coat retriever. The hair on the roller has been the biggest issue with EVERY vac I have purchased. We have leased/rented our homes for the last 10 years due to hub’s job, and each move (4) resulted in a new vac! We have been complemented at the end of lease/move for the way our carpets are left! But it takes ALOT of work using the vacuum and my Bissel Big Green Carpet cleaner, which I use monthly on one room or another.
I just got the Oreck XL which seems to work great, but the truth is I use a 3 step process, I pre-sweep the carpets with a stiff brisle broom to get the most hair, leaves, what ever has been tracked in by those big ole bear feet! Then I use my old Bissel to Pre-vac, if needed. Then the Oreck that does pull the sand and such, but I really would love to find the “Perfect Pet Vacuum” that does it all in one step! Hmmm re-reading this, it’s NO WONDER I need a nap at the end of vacuuming! Perhaps my Oreck isn’t the great vac I thought it was? I guess I am of little use when answering your survey LOL.
Exhausted and Frustrated,
Nana

I had a Bissell that weighed a ton, but vacuumed good. I got the DC24 refurbished and I love my Dyson! It is very lightweight, but cleans great. I recommend it to everyone. Dyson tech support is also very helpful. I had an issue with the roller head not spinning and they taught me how to reset the brush with a couple button pushes. Awesome!
Carolyn says
Quality over quantity will always save you money! We have a 14 month old and a dog that sheds like crazy. We use our dison at least once a day – sometimes more. We’ve had ours for 3+years. We’ve totally gotten our money’s worth. Get it… it’s worth every penny!
JG says
I like my Dyson, but I will say their customer service is horrible. The hose cracked on my and I called 4 different times to get a new one and never got it and the people were not friendly on the phone at all. My first one never sucked well and I figured that was normal but I got a new one and it works much better. Wish I would have returned the first one when I bought it.
Sandi says
Kirby is the absolute best! No plastic, all metal engine. I bought a refurbished one….8 yrs ago and it is still kicking with my two large dogs, cat, guinea pigs, and ferret….oh and did I mention 3 kids and their 20 friends who come daily!
Ti says
I’m on the Dyson bandwagon! We needed a really good HEPA vac when we had some medical issues requiring a sterile environment. Bit the bullet & got a Dyson ball (w/ 20% off at BB&B). Before hubby came home from the hospital I had the carpets professionally cleaned, then ran the Dyson over it for good measure. The canister was FULL!
I dumped it all into a zip lock to show why a good vacuum is so worth it!

I am a vacuum-aholic! My husband finally added up how much I spent in vacuums over the last 5 years. WHOA!! I vacuum my house 3-4 x’s a week. I work 12 hr shifts as a nurse 3-4 days a week and vacuum the whole house everyday I am off!! Anyway…. finally got my DREAM Dyson! Absolutely worth EVERY Single penny! I have used eureka, hoover, electrolux, shark, you name it! I will NEVER use anything but a Dyson again. Bought it about 6 mths ago. Found it on sale $499 vacuum and got it for $280. Thought my carpets were clean until I used the Dyson! It was SCARY what I got out of our NEW carpets!! We also have a dog and a cat.
