The only time I deal with heartburn is when I’m pregnant, but I remember well how miserable it is when it strikes!
If you don’t want to go the over-the-counter drug route, then you might want to try some of these natural remedies at home first.
Ways to Avoid Heartburn
- Avoid trigger foods such as chocolate, citrus fruit, spicy foods, tomatoes, etc.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and citrus juice.
- Extra weight also plays a factor in incidents of heartburn.
- Eat smaller and more frequent meals.
- Wait a few hours before going to bed after eating.
- Sleep with your head elevated.
- Stress causes heartburn so try relaxation methods.
Natural Home Remedies for Heartburn
Consumed raw, cooked, or as a tea, Ginger is one of the oldest treatments for heartburn or nausea.
Turmeric stimulates digestion and can help to prevent acid build up. You can add it to your foods as a spice or take in capsule form before eating. Tumeric is also a natural anti-inflammatory and so is helpful for all kinds of issues!
Aloe Vera Juice soothes the esophagus and can help to relieve heartburn, but only use it if it’s formulated for internal use.
Apple Cider Vinegar is not only good for you in general, but can help to reduce heartburn. Some are brave enough to take a shot of it straight, but you might want to dilute it in water first.
Bananas are a natural antacid. I’ve read several reports from people who have said that a banana really helped their heartburn and then others who said that the bananas actually made it worse… it’s worth a shot though!
Mix a teaspoon with an 8 oz glass of water and drink it to help settle your stomach.
Essential Oils
To help promote proper digestion, I also like drinking a glass of water with a drop of lemon essential oil and/or peppermint essential oil in it.
