When my boys were too big for the kid’s menu but not able to eat an adult meal yet, we would let them each order an appetizer and split them. Usually chili cheese fries and wings but what the heck, it’s a vacation!
Vacationing on a budget is my special forte…I travel a lot, love to have a good time and do fun things while I am there. If you are gong to a large metropolitan area, seek out their “China town” .. there is one is almost every major city in the USA, including Honolulu! It is generally a place where you can get a cheap, hot meal that tastes wonderful
Find out where the local go. Even in high end area, like Manhatten, or expensive areas like Hawaii, most people have to live on a budget and aren’t going out for $75 dinners every night. Some of the best “home cooking” local restaurant foods are the cheapest. I often will get an UPDATED version of a travel guide such as the “See more Spend Less” Fromer series. Updated versions are necessary (look for coupons for your book stores!) as a lot changes.. I’ve always saved my money spent on the books.
ALl that being said, I steer away from chain restaurants like the plague, and find that often if I go in search of locally owned restaurants, the prices are half that of chains.
I took my parents to NYC for the day this past weekend. For 3 people, including the bus fair, I spent a few dollars less than $135. By using good resources and doing research, I got us there, we road the Staten Island Ferry from which we had fantastic views of the Manhatten skyline and Statue of Liberty, road the subway twice, saw Ground Zero, Wall Street. Empire State Building, Times Square, Broadway, had a snack, and ate such a huge lunch we didn’t have room for supper. The normal bus fair alone for the three of us would have been $165.. we had our whole day, all transportation, and ate for less than that. My two biggest resources… New York City, See More, Spend Less, and NYC Free and Dirt Cheap… and a Groupon special on the bus fair.
