DIY Flea Collar Using Essential Oils!

DIY Flea Collar Essential Oils

It has been a little over a year now since I jumped into the world of essential oils.

I haven’t regretted that decision one bit (actually, my only regret is not looking into it more 8 years ago when I first heard about Young Living) and I’m excited about sharing “oily” ideas with you guys!

For our family, essential oils have replaced our air fresheners, our cleaning solutions, and even our medicine cabinet.

Detox Your Home

Like many others, we have used essential oils to detox our home, and I’m thrilled to share with you something new that we’ll be doing to keep harmful chemicals off of our new family member… Rosie!  Isn’t she adorable?!?  That’s her at the top of this post.

She’s a lab mix that we got from the animal shelter and y’all… we had no idea what we were getting into with a lab.

But she’s learning quickly, and while she definitely has her crazy moments, she’s a really good dog that we are just thrilled to have (except for those times that she’s pulling on the kids’ clothes to try to get them to play with her – we haven’t figured out how to break that habit yet so tips are very appreciated).  :)

Since we’re new to the pet world, I’ve been doing a lot of reading and research about pets and one of the things that disturbed me was just how controversial the chemicals in flea collars are.

Here’s what Organic Gardening said about a recent report from the National Resources Defense Council….

“many name-brand collars on store shelves contain chemicals that can harm pets and their owners, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) isn’t doing anything to stop them.

The report honed in on two particular chemicals, tetrachlorvinphos (TCVP) and propoxur, used on national brands of flea collars, including Hartz and Zodiac. TCVP belongs to the class of nerve-damaging chemicals known as organophosphates, most of which are so hazardous that they’ve been banned for residential use or for use on pets. Propoxur belongs to a class of chemicals called carbamates, which also cause nerve damage, and it’s on California’s Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to cause cancer. NRDC was particularly concerned with exposure among toddlers and children, who pet animals and then put their hands in their mouths.” Source: Organic Gardening

Those chemicals are definitely not something I feel good about having on our dog, much less around our kids who are playing with her and petting her!

So instead, I did a little research and found an awesome recipe for a flea collar made with essential oils! This recipe is from The Complete Book Of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy by Valerie Anne Worwood.

DIY Flea Collar With Essential Oils

You can also use essential oils in a spray bottle as a flea repellent!

Just mix 1/2 cup of distilled water, a drop or two of Thieves soap or castille soap, and 8-16 drops (total) of your preferred essential oils that fleas hate.

Here’s a list of flea-repelling oils:

Eucalyptus radiata, Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree), Lemongrass, Pine, Cedarwood, Peppermint, Lemon, Lavender, Orange, Melrose, Palo Santo, Thyme, and Citronella.

If you’re new to essential oils, what might be best is to start off with the Purification essential oil blend that’s in the Premium Essential Oils Starter Kit. Purification contains citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, Melaleuca alternifolia, lavender, and myrtle so there are several of the flea-repelling oils in there.

Sizzling bacon wrapped around avocado and garlic - a bite of happiness!
Author:
Recipe type: Appetizer
Serves: 20 bites
Ingredients
  • 10 slices bacon, cut in half crosswise
  • 5-6 large cloves of fresh garlic, sliced into ⅛” thick pieces
  • 1 large avocado, skinned and cut in 1” cubes
  • optional: Tabasco Sauce
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F, and warm up griddle.
  2. Place slices of bacon on griddle, cooking the first side until partly done (still soft).
  3. Flip the bacon slices over then add the garlic slices to the griddle, making sure a flat side of each garlic slice is touching the griddle.
  4. After a minute, flip the garlic slices and cook for 30-60 more seconds (at most let the garlic brown lightly)
  5. Remove the bacon and garlic from the griddle quickly so it doesn’t overcook.
  6. Working as fast as you can, wrap one piece of avocado plus one slice of garlic with a strip of bacon, and secure with a toothpick.
  7. (Optional: for a spicy bite, put a few shakes of tabasco sauce on each avocado chunk before rolling up)
  8. Bake at 375 for 3 minutes until sizzling.
  9. Serve immediately.

Why I Put Lavender Essential Oil In My Mascara!

Why I put lavender essential oil in my mascara

Earlier this summer, there were several posts popping up in the essential oils groups that I’m a part of on Facebook about how people were putting a drop of lavender essential oil in their mascara and their eyelashes started looking a ton better (longer, thicker, healthier) in just a few weeks.

I figured I’d try it too, but I wanted to know the why behind it.

Well, I found out. And I wish I could unknow (is that even a word?) the why.

I have been perfectly happy these past 34 years not knowing about this. But now that I know, I will never again put on mascara without essential oils in it.

Are you ready? Sure you don’t want to close the page and quit reading?

Ok, here it goes…

Apparently there are tiny little mites that live at the bottom of our hair follicles in our eyelashes. They are called eyelash mites (you can read more about them here).

Based on a study in the Journal of Medical Entomology, it is estimated that about half of adults carry eyelash mites.

And if you use mascara and eyeliner (that would be the majority of us ladies), it’s almost a guarantee that you have them.

Now, before you freak out, keep in mind that there is usually no issue. Mites and humans have been living together for a long time. But, when too many mites get into the root of the hair follicle in one of your eyelashes, then that eyelash will fall out.

If you end up with an infestation of them in lots of hair follicles, then that can be an issue if you are trying to maintain long and full eyelashes.

No amount of scrubbing at the end of the day can make the mites go away (they are down in the hair follicles), BUT, there are a couple of essential oils that people have used to promote long and healthy eyelashes despite these little critters.

(1) Tea Tree Oil (technically known as Melaleuca Alternifolia) and (2) Lavender Essential Oil

I personally like the smell of lavender essential oil more than tea tree oil, so that’s what I’ve been using.

To make sure that I’m getting the lavender on my eyelashes daily, I put just one drop of lavender essential oil in my mascara when I open a new tube and swirl my wand around the tube before applying the mascara. (IMPORTANT: I DO NOT put a drop in each time I apply – just once when I open a new tube.)

Then I just apply like I normally would!

I’ve used lavender with both my regular mascara, and with the transplanting gel on 3D Fiber Lashes, and it has worked well with both of these brands for me.

Some people have had issues with other kinds of mascara (read through the comments) but it has worked well with the two mascara brands that I use the most.

I have been doing this for around 3 months, and I can definitely tell a difference in the length and thickness of my lashes!

IMPORTANT: I personally only feel comfortable using Young Living essential oils. There are virtually no labeling requirements for essential oils, so it’s extremely important to know the company that you buy from and the source of the oils. Please please (PLEASE!) don’t just go out and buy “lavender essential oil”. Many store brands adulterate their oils with chemicals, fillers, and use the hybrid LAVANDIN instead of LAVANDULA AUGUSTIFOLIA. There are uses for Lavandin, but this is not one of them.

Young Living’s lavender is 100% lavandula augustifolia (I got to participate in the lavender harvest last year!)

I’d love to hear from those of you who have tried the same thing! Were your lashes longer and thicker too?
