About six months ago we switched our phone service to Magic Jack. We had been using Vonage and paying around $30 a month, which, at the time, seemed like a really good deal to us.
You can read the full story HERE of how I first learned about the Magic Jack and how easy it was to set up on my computer.
Now that we are six months down the road, I can say that I am even more impressed with Magic Jack than I was at the beginning and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to reduce their phone bill. And by reduce I mean that we went from spending $360+ a year on our phone bill to $20! And if you are currently paying $50-$60 a month for phone service (which is very common) then you stand to save over $500 a year!!
Many of our friends have gone to having cell phones only, but I like having a home phone number with free long distance because I would end up going over on my cell phone bill every month if I didn’t! Also, I feel better about my kids talking to their grandparents on a regular phone rather than a cell phone. There are just too many unknowns about the safety of children using cell phones often.
Do you want to try out Magic Jack too? You can sign up for a free 30 day trial HERE. Since I first posted about it, Magic Jack seems to have sprung up at several major retail chains (like Best Buy), BUT when you buy it through a major retail chain you don’t get to try it for 30 days to see if you like it.
It was definitely worth-it for us to switch over and I can understand why it was PC Magazine’s “Product of the Year” for 2008.
NOTE: I’ve had several questions asking if Magic Jack has 911 service. Yes, they do! And if you take your Magic Jack with you when you travel, then you can add a new address everywhere you go, so that the 911 service will always know where you are. At the bottom of your Magic Jack screen on your computer, you will see the following (yes, that’s a fake address):
If the light is green, like you see here, then your address location is verified. Just make sure that light is green and that the address is correct and you are good to make a 911 call! Just realize that, as with anything that must be plugged in, if the power goes out, your phone goes out too (but that’s why we have cell phones!)

I recently switched our home service to Magic Jack. We are so happy we switched. It suits our needs perfectly.

We switched to Magic Jack several months ago also. I have to say that I am a little disappointed with the quality of the service. Sometimes the person on the other line gets cut out, and sometimes it echoes. It is not, in my opinion, as good as a traditional phone. However, I am willing to put up with these problems in order to save a good amount on my phone bill.
