Use Less, Spend Less!

I’m sure the manufacturers don’t mind at all that we tend to use too much toothpaste, too much shampoo, too much dish soap, and too much laundry detergent. In fact, I bet it makes them quite happy!

But for those of us who are trying to get the most “bang for the buck” we need to think a little bit differently than the average consumer. Here are a few examples of ways we can use less and spend less:

Toothpaste – How much toothpaste do we put on our toothbrushes? A very small amount of toothpaste will accomplish the same thing as a long strip. Don’t buy into the commercials that show a thick, long strip of toothpaste all the way down a long toothbrush.

Dish soap – What I typically do with dish soap is put about 1/4 of a bottle in an empty dish soap bottle and then fill the rest with water. In my opinion, it works just as well as the full-strength soap!

Hand soap – Do you love those foam hand soaps as much as I do? If you haven’t noticed, they are usually a good bit more expensive than the no fun regular handsoaps. Just add a little bit of regular handsoap to a foam pump and fill the rest with water. Foamy, fun handsoap without the $$$!

Laundry Detergent – This is another product that we just use way too much of. Do an experiment and use half of the laundry detergent that you usually do and see if your clothes still come out clean… I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

These are just a few examples of the ways that we can get the most for our $$, the common theme being that A LITTLE BIT GOES A LONG WAY! And even though I get most of the products above completely free, the less I use the longer they last and the more we are able to GIVE and bless others!

What are some of the ways you’ve found to make your hygiene products last longer? Please leave a comment and share your ideas!

I also have been making my own detergent for almost a year and I don't notice a difference. If you go go youtube and search for laundry soap recipes, or how to make laundry soap, there's different methods/amounts, but they all basicly use the same 3 ingredients. It's soooo easy!

I have a front loader washer and i use about a tablespoon of regulaur detergent instead of buying the HE stuff. I was told when i purchased this that its fine to use. also when a repair guy came out to check something he done a test on the washer while he was here and said i was useing the correct amount he suggested me useing the detergent this way i told him i was and thats when he done the test to make sure i was useing the correct amount..this says so much money on detergent it last forever it seems.

For the dishwasher, get powdered good brand (like Cascade) and use ONE TABLESPOON per load. Liquids can gunk up the dishwasher and cause problems.

Anonymous,What's your recipe for homemade laundry detergent?

I buy the foaming hand soap refill and just continue to fill up our existing containers. I also make my own laundry detergent, courtesy of The Duggar Family. I've done this for a year now and love the low expense involved. Plus, my clothes are just as clean as when I used the mega expensive detergent bought from the store.

I do all of the things you suggested. In addition to the foam hand soap, I use an old Dawn Foam Pump and add just a few drops of dish soap and fill the rest with water. You have to be careful not to use too much soap or it will not foam but come out gloppy. For laundry detergent I have been using the Purex 3-in-1 sheets, and I cut them in thirds, Like Rachel said, try it and you will see your laundry comes out just as clean!

Thanks for the info. I had wondered if I could do that with the foaming handsoaps; I will definitely try this next time I get some free! Also, I use much less laundry detergent than what's called for and have never noticed a difference.

One idea i was taught - anything that comes in a tube - toothpaste - lotion - makeup - when think its empty its not - cut the tube open so u can use the complete amount in the tube - zelda
