Creating a residual income through network marketing is something that I am incredibly passionate about and I’d love to share with you my story as well as a few tips on how to get started in creating a successful network marketing business.
How It All Began
I have been fascinated by natural remedies since my early 20’s. I experienced (many times) activated charcoal getting rid of any trace of a stomach virus and I watched as the doctors were amazed at my friend’s daughter’s burn healing after soaking her feet in colloidal silver. I started learning about herbs and bought a few of the most common ones to help us in emergency situations (like bee stings, sunburns, and for general skin health).
In my mid-20s, a lady gave me a drop of something called Young Living Lavender Essential Oil to help my 1 year old calm down and he was OUT within a minute of putting that cotton ball in his carseat. I was amazed that this MIRACLE was able to calm him down so quickly when we had been trying everything we could to calm him down and nothing else was working.
But when she told me that this essential oil came from a company called Young Living and that it was a network marketing company I RAN FOR THE HILLS!! Actually, she just gave me a brochure and I said something to the effect of, “Thanks! I’ll let you know if I’m interested.”
You see, I had had a very negative experience with network marketing in college (you can read more about that here) and I was absolutely not going to be pressured to talk to my friends and family about a particular product ever again.
I got a few essential oils from our local health food store after that, but never used them for anything more than cleaning. (The health food store lavender did nothing to calm my kids!)
Fast forward a few years… I had started Surviving The Stores as a way to keep myself accountable in grocery budgeting. I would share the good deals that I would get at the store, along with healthy, budget-friendly recipes to help other families be able to do the same. One of the very first fellow-bloggers that I met was a fellow blogger named Alyssa Francis. She lived close to me and we quickly became friends and talked almost daily online.
One day she told me that she had bought a starter kit of essential oils through a company called Young Living because she was looking for natural ways to support her daughter’s immune system.
I walked with her as she saw many amazing changes in her daughter’s life and was convinced that we needed these essential oils in our lives too. I researched essential oil companies and came to the conclusion that Young Living was the only company that I felt comfortable buying essential oils from because of their Seed To Seal guarantee.
I was convinced that we needed these!! But convincing my husband Ryan to use a part of our monthly budget on these was a different story!
It took me an entire year to convince him that we needed to add these to our wellness routine, but he finally caved and we bought them in February of 2013 when I told him that these oils were the only thing I wanted for Valentine’s Day.
Already Too Busy
When we bought our starter kit, Ryan and I were already working together from home full-time on Surviving The Stores as well as homeschooling four kids! I had no desire to take part in the “business side” of Young Living because I didn’t think that I had the time.
So for a year we only used Young Living Essential Oils in our family and saw immune system support, respiratory system support, better skin health, and so much more!
I would bring essential oils with me wherever I would go and use them on myself and my kids. I would offer them to others when needed to help them out.
I would share about what I was using essential oils for on my personal Facebook page.
And friends wanted to get a kit too!
Then I put up this page on Surviving The Stores with ways I was using essential oils and instructions to get a starter kit.
My First Big Check
This was nothing like my network marketing experience in college because I was just sharing essential oils with friends (not trying to sell to them). In February of 2014, a year after I bought my starter kit, I earned a check for $729.33.
That really was the check that got my wheels turning.
I’m an entrepreneur at heart and at that point I really could see the potential.
Up until that point I had been passively sharing with others when they asked, but that all changed that March when I started ACTIVELY sharing with others. I still made a commitment never to pressure anyone, but I truly believed (and believe even more now) that these essential oils need to be in every. single. home.
My check that May grew to $4,833.56.
In June I started a Facebook group for those who had joined either through me or through someone on my team and before the end of 2014 we had our first 5-figure monthly check.
Current Young Living Income
I am now a Young Living Diamond which has a monthly income range of 20,000 – 50,000 per month in residual income. Yes, residual income. Young Living is a 20+ year old company that is STILL growing and is the world leader and expert in essential oils. The people who find products that they love and can’t live without continue ordering every single month.
But here’s what’s amazing, and what I love even more than the freedom that this business has provided for our family…
As of November 2017, out of the almost 10,000 people on our team, we have 766 team members who are pursuing the business and making an impact on their family’s finances.
489 of our team members are at the rank of STAR. These members are making an AVERAGE income of $76 per month, which typically goes towards their order of oils that they can’t live without. What a huge discount!
142 of our team members are at the rank of SENIOR STAR. These members are making an AVERAGE income of $255 per month. That is a huge dent in their grocery budgets!
90 of our team members are at the rank of EXECUTIVE. These members are earning an AVERAGE income of $549 per month. That’s more than a car payment!
36 of our team members are at the rank of SILVER. These members are earning an AVERAGE income of $2,221 per month. That’s a very solid part-time income!
6 of our team members are at the rank of GOLD. These members are earning an AVERAGE income of $6,042 per month. Gold is the “full-time income” rank!
2 of our team members are at the rank of PLATINUM. These members are also earning a six-figure income with an AVERAGE income of $14,710 per month. That is FREEDOM!!
The AVERAGE income at the next level, DIAMOND is $38,750 per month and we have a couple of team members who are REALLY close to hitting this next stage!
We are currently working our way to CROWN DIAMOND which has an average income of $74,335 per month.
And remember my friend Alyssa who was using essential oils for her daughter? She’s currently at the top rank in Young Living, ROYAL CROWN DIAMOND, which has an average income of $141,851 per month. Yes, that’s a seven-figure income per year.
The possibilities are AMAZING and I’ve found that one of my favorite things to do is help others see the power of having a true residual income.
Network Marketing Success
But what does it take to be successful in network marketing?
Here are my top three tips:
1. Have a passion for what you’re sharing.
When you’re thinking about which network marketing company to join, make sure it’s one that you’re TRULY passionate about. The friends that I have who are successful in network marketing (in a variety of companies) are passionate about what they are sharing with others.
2. Be committed for the long-haul.
Network Marketing is NOT a get-rich-quick scheme. It takes concentrated effort over a long period of time. But those who stick with it are the ones who end up being successful!
3. Know that not all network marketing companies are for everyone.
If you’re looking at income opportunities, ask some questions before you join a particular company. Questions like… Are there sales quotas? Do I have to keep an inventory in stock to be successful? Is this a product that the same people will buy over and over or will I need to continually find new customers to sell to? What are the requirements to stay active? I have friends who LOVE being a part of a business with an inventory, but a business like that is not for me. You know you best, so ask these types of questions before you get started with a company!
