How To Get Rid Of A Sinus Infection! (Or, at least, how *I* got rid of mine!) :)

How to use tea tree oil to get rid of a sinus infection! It really works!!

Over the past few years I’ve gotten rid of pretty much ALL chemical cleaners in our house. I had started to get sinus infections pretty often and they always happened within hours (sometimes within minutes) of using a chemical-based cleaning product from a spray bottle.

And y’all… sinus infections are AWFUL. You can’t breathe, you can’t sleep because you can’t breathe, you can’t talk, you walk around in fear that you are going to embarrass yourself with major nasal drippage (spell check is saying that’s not a word, but I think it is). Like I said, awful.

Well, I decided one day to just completely throw out any non-natural cleaners. Yes, ALL of the ones that I had gotten for free too. And I have to say it was COMPLETELY WORTH IT!

And I never deal with sinus infections anymore!

Well, unless, like this past weekend, I’m around chemical spray cleaners.

I have been pretty miserable the past couple of days with major sinus pressure and drainage that I am positive is the direct result of being around some kind of spray cleaner this past Saturday. I woke up Sunday morning with the sneezing (it always starts with sneezing) and by Monday morning it was a full-blown sinus infection.

I hadn’t dealt with one in a while so I hadn’t done any research on natural remedies for sinus infections. I immediately did a few saline nasal rinses (I used the WaterPic SinuSense – and wow, I just looked at the reviews and saw that several people were having issues with the water getting into the battery section?? I’ve been very happy with mine though and no issues) but it had already progressed so much that the rinses didn’t help.

I was still feeling pretty awful this morning and ask a few of my blogging friends if they had any advice. Well, my friend Holly from iGOBOGO suggested that I try boiling some water with a couple of trop of Tea Tree Oil on the stove and breathing in the vapors.

Young Living Tea Tree OIl

Sure, why not?  I would’ve tried just about anything at that point and I just so happened to have Tea Tree Oil in my “medicine” cabinet! :)

To be honest, I was fairly skeptical. Yes, I know Tea Tree Oil is pretty powerful stuff, but I really thought my sinus infection had progressed to the point of no return and that I would just have to wait it out until it cleared up.  (Keep in mind that according to the Wikipedia article it should never be swallowed, but that could be because of how rare therapeutic-grade tea tree oil is. Tea Tree Oil {Melaleuca Alternifolia} from Young Living is GRAS, or Generally Recognized As Safe for internal consumption, by the FDA.)

But I did it.

And guess what?

IT CLEARED UP!! I was completely floored!

Now, I do have to say that it HURT at first. It was more of a burning sensation, and it did not feel good at all. So don’t expect any nice soothing feelings when you stick your head over the pot.

But I got past the burning, and kept my head over the pot for a few minutes and slowly but surely it started to clear up. And I’d say within about 10 minutes or so after doing it I could actually BREATHE. Yes, through BOTH nostrils!

It’s been several hours now and I’m STILL clear. WOW!

So, THANK YOU Holly for sharing the tip with me and now I’m sharing it with you guys in hopes that it will help one of y’all out! :)

I’m more that happy to spend money on essential oils when they help me to stay out of the doctor’s office! You can read more about how I use essential oils & where I buy them here!

To recap the “how to” part:

1.  Boil some water in a pot on the stove.

2.  Add a couple of drops of Tea Tree Oil to the boiling water.

3.  Breathe in the steam for a few minutes.

  1. apple cider vinegar does the same thing too…

  2. Shannon – Do you boil it with water and breathe in the steam?

  3. OK, Gonna try it! THANKS! :)

  4. yep same thing as the tea tree oil… burns too and makes the house stink… i know that some can’t handle the oil… so it is a good switch up… but i am going to get the oil… tired of my kids complaining about the smell of the other lol

    • Shannon, I’ll just add my prediction, they will probably wish you go back to the ACVinegar smell. If what I have isn’t counterfeit, it smells a lot like turpentine.

  5. Kristin Smith says:

When I was growing up I used to get really sick with nasty allergy attacks. My mom started putting tea tree oil in a humidifier in my room and it always helped really quickly. It also helped clear up the horrible coughs I would get.

    • Thanks so much for this comment! All three of my children are sick with sinus junk. They are little though so I know there is know way I could get them over a steaming pot. This was exactly what I was thinking of but didn’t know if it would still help them. Thanks again for sharing!

  6. Tea Tree Oil can be found at Wal mart for $2.78 a 2 oz. bottle. It is located in the ethenic hair products.

  7. That’s awesome, great for you!! I too got rid of all our toxic cleaners and personal care products back in 2009! You can use Tea Tree oil or Melaleuca Oil (which is the uncut version of Tea Tree oil) to prevent allergies, stuffy noses, and coughs. For allergies we soak a Q-Tip with the oil and then rub the inside of our noses. The oil acts as a barrier so no alergens can come in. for coughs and stuffy noses I mix a couple drops of oil with lotion and rub it on chest, neck and under the nose. We also, use it in the humidifier!

    • Erma Scranton says:

Thank you I was concerned that I could be hurting myself by rubbing melaleuca oil inside of nose …I still have it but it does seem to alleviate symptoms …I also use a silver clean humidifier and Neti Pot …..but I’m not giving up .

  8. Apple Cider Vinagar works wonders too! I get them all the time and when I do – I take a tablespoon (mixed with some warm water and honey) 2x a day…within 24-48hrs at most, it is gone! As I said, I get them often and have not had to take meds in almost 2 yrs with this remedy.

  9. Oh I am going to give this a try. My head has felt awful for a week. I even tried the netti pot to no avail. Wonder if lavender might work too?

  10. terri sanders says:

I am glad I read this! I am going to try real soon, the sooner the better. I had sinus surgery a year ago……..still having lots of infections. thank you

  11. You are all morons.

  12. I’m glad it works for you, but from what you’ve said it doesn’t sound like a sinus infection. It sounds like hayfever or another allergic reaction. Do be careful with the steam, won’t you. You don’t want to have a clear head with a burnt face.

  13. Hmm all these sinus issues. Is it the barium and aluminum that the HAARP Weather modification government is dropping down on us? I used peroxide ll.5 alkaline water and a drop of tea tree. I inhaled the solution WOW! It is powerful and it felt like the back of my head was going to come off. I do not recommend it. Although I can breathe and it works. Inhaling the tea tree has got to be more kind and easier method. But the real issue is the Chem trail…we are allowing it because we have not protested it ? and it is happening daily in our skies. How can this be stopped? We should not have to be going through this insidious experience…

    • Linda Van Scotter says:

No wonder my skin is acting weird. We have chemtrails 80% of the time. we had none while the government was shutdown!

    • Chem trails r bad…… Another good thing to use is tea tree oil soap!!!!! Wonderful for ur skin, it makes ur skin moist, and never dries it out…. My whole family loves it!!! Research it out, you wouldn’t believe all the great stuff it does…..One of the things it does is it kills bacteria and fungus thats on your skin……and other things …… check it out!!! :-)

  14. A true sinus infection is bacterial. If you don’t treat a bacterial infection with an antibiotic, it COULD go to a major organ – like your heart or kidneys. It happened to my father. He lost his kidney function after being perfectly healthy other than having an upper respiratory infection. What you probably cleared up was an allergy, NOT a sinus infection.

  15. after years of believing that sinusitis was strictly a bacterial or viral infection, research emerged in the late 1990s that showed sinusitis is sometimes caused by a fungal infection. In cases of chronic sinusitis that do not improve with antibiotics or decongestants, ENT doctors suspect that the body’s immune system is reacting to a fungal invader, causing the sinus cavities to remain irritated.

Fungal sinusitis occurs when fungi organisms, like mold, invade the sinus cavities. It is not unusual for fungi to make their way into your airways — these organisms are ubiquitous in our surroundings — we inhale them every day. However, when the immune system is suppressed, fungi can take up residence in the sinuses, attracted by the damp, dark environment. Tea tree oil is an anti-fugal, could be a connection

  16. Another healpful tip ~ Eucalyptus Oil, a few drops on a cottom ball and put in a little plastic baggie (sandwich size) and you can use like a mini inhaler. Also good to put on corners of pillow before bed too (collar of shirt you wear to bed too) just be careful may stain. But yhis has been a life saver! When completly blocked you can keep the little baggie with the cotton balls right in front of you and it gradually opens up yhe sinuses. Eucalyptus will work best tea tree may also

  17. I get chronic sinus infections a lot. I was diagnosed with hypogammaglobulenemia. My immune system doesn’t work the way it should to fight off bacterial infections. I will try some of your suggestions. Where do I get tea tree oil and how do I know which brand is organic or best? How many drops should I put in a cool mist humidifier? Also, what is chemtrail???

  18. How do you get the mucus that stuck in the back of your throat out? Had this for about 3 weeks and can’t get rid of it, makes me feel like i’m choking.

    • I sometimes get that too. I boil water and add peppermint or eucalyptus oil and then you inhale through your mouth deeply….after a few times it should help loosen phlegm, so you can cough, and release. Also adding lemon to water helps thin mucus. Adding xylitol to nasal rinses work well for some people too. This is something good to look up on the Internet.

what can i do for an ear infection i’ve had one for a week now an its affecting my balance!!!!!!

  20. I have been using teatree oil to prevent and cure nasal cold for decades. It always works. But indeed, tea tree oil is powerful, so please be careful using it. I have always followed the instructions of a book I got with the first bottle I bought. It recommended to use for steaming: max 3 drops during max 5 minutes and then to stay indoors for at least an hour (don’t even open the front door or a window in order to prevent catching pneumonia).

  21. Barbara says:

This discussion is fascinating! It is good to share what we know that works, because that’s how we have always taken care of our loved ones. I use tea tree oil a little differently for the sinuses. These are deep, deep cavities, and they need to be treated over a period of days, sometimes weeks, in order to clear out any fungal activity. Try measuring 1 part tea tree oil to 10 parts of a carrier oil(I use castor oil which is healing also). Tea tree is too strong to use on it’s own! Mix well and drop several drops into the nasal cavity while lying down. If used for at least three or more days, you should feel an improvement. This recipe has never failed to improve the issue, especially when antibiotics had run their course.

  22. Anonymous says:

I had a sinus infection diagnosed by my family doctor. He prescribed an antibiotic and wanted me back for a checkup in a week. I told him that I will return for the visit but, I was going to use a nasal rinse with water, salt and a drop or two of tea tree oil, instead of the prescribed antibiotic. He then looked up some information about tea tree oil and told me to make sure that I only use a drop or two in the solution. He also said that the tea tree oil is recognized as having antibiotic and antifungal properties. The sinus, and the annoying cough from the phlegm traveling down the back of the throat, was gone in 4 days. On my return visit he was amazed at how quickly it worked. Let’s see if he passes on this remedy.

  23. Heather says:

I mixed one drop of tea tree oil to every 1 Tbsp of distilled, VERY mildly salted water, & filled up an old nasal spray bottle. I put my head back & dropped the mixture down my nostrils, straight into my sinus cavities. Yes, it stung a bit & was a bit uncomfortable as was expected ! Within minutes my nasal passages were clear & I could breathe easily again. I believe this stopped the mucus dripping down my throat causing further throat & chest infectiions. This simple remedy worked for me……
