Is Shopping On Black Friday Worth It? {Worth It Wednesday}

Wednesday

From Wikipedia:

The day’s name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1966 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that “Black Friday” indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or are “in the black.”

Wow! You learn something new every day!

We’ve been talking a lot about Black Friday recently, so I wanted to pose the question to you guys… do you think that shopping on Black Friday is worth it?

Do you get up earlier than the crack of dawn and wait in line for hours? Do you stay in bed and Black Friday shop online?

I’ve done both and for the most part I prefer shopping online, BUT like I mentioned yesterday in my 5 Tips For Surviving Black Friday post, I love to people-watch so I typically at least go to one store. :)

What advice would you give someone who’s thinking about trying out the Black Friday thing? Do you think it’s even worth it?

  1. Just to remember that there might be only 10 of that thing you want desperately at the store that is advertising it, so you have to be first in the door. Better yet shop online!!

  2. I’m not personally impressed with the ads this year. I think they have been better in the past. :( But if you ARE shopping… get there EARLY so you can be first in line and make friends with the people around you in case you have to go to the bathroom. :)

  3. My husband & I love it & have had tons of luck every year. We have 3 kids so we do whatever to get a great bargain. I can say, from experience, say away from toys r us! Spend many many hrs in line for items you can get anywhere, esp since most stores price match.

  5. Uh YEAH!!!!!!!

  6. Yes, I have saved a bundle, but the hassle is not worth it to me! So I decorate my house for Christmas that day!

  7. I definitely think it’s worth it. It’s fun to go to :)

  8. I have saved bundles, but the hassle and crowds are not worth it to me! I decorate our house that day!

  9. Its totally worth it! Especially if you have lots of kids to buy for.

  10. I think it’s fun. Get there early, go with a buddy (so you can split up if necessary), have a plan & bring the ads. Relax & celebrate with breakfast somewhere afterwards!

  11. I say forget black friday and enjoy cyber monday same type of deals with way more product in stock. Most stores have free shipping. You can make money using ebates and all from the comfort of your home in your pajamas. Advise get online as early as possible but several sites do divergent deals every hour

  12. *different

  13. So last year Target had the Wii Fit Board on a great black Friday sale. But of course they only had a limited number and if you weren’t there, first in line, you lost out. Target’s policy is that if you purchase an item and it goes on sale for a lower price within two weeks after you purchase it they will adjust the price. So . . . I bought the Wii Fit Board a week prior to black Friday (when they had plenty sitting on the shelf) and just went back in on either black Friday or that Saturday and got the difference back.

Check out the ads now and call the store to see what their policy is on this. If they will adjust your receipt within a week or two, buy that ‘thing’ now and just go back when it’s not a zoo to get a price adjustment. That’s how I black Friday shop!

On the origin of the term black Friday . . . so was it called ‘black’ because the shoppers were mostly black? The only other explanation w/be because the clothing the shoppers wore was black but seeing as it was pre-1966 . . . I’m thinking it wasn’t that. Interesting tidbit of information.

  14. It has become a tradition for me, my daughter and daughter-in-love-a fun hang out time-try to get some deals. My husband then meets us at Chick-Fil-A and buys us breakfast. IT is a great family time.

  15. Unless you are after a certain item I would say no but taking a cup of coffee and people watching has always been fun with my kids.
