Homemade Crackers

My kids were asking for crackers this morning. And when my 22 month old hears the word “cracker” she then looks up at me with her sweet hazel eyes and a smile and says, “ca-ker… ca-ker…ca-ker….ca-ker.” How do you resist that? But we were out of crackers! I typically only buy crackers when they are on sale, and with the way my kids go through them, we run out pretty quickly.

What is a mom to do?? Instead of saying that we don’t have any crackers, or heading to the store to buy some at full price I said, “Let’s make some!”

One of my favorite things to do is make up recipes and see how they turn out, so that’s what I did! I poured some whole wheat flour and some white flour in a bowl (it probably came out to about a cup and half), added a few sprinkles of salt, about 1/2 tsp. of baking powder, some basil flavored olive oil (around 2 Tbsp.), and enough water to make it stay together.

I rolled it out on a large cutting board to about 1/8″ thick and then cut it into little squares. I baked them at 350 degrees for around 15 minutes, let them cool, and we had crackers!

The crackers cost relatively nothing, and the kids LOVED them! You could add whatever herbs you want to… rosemary, thyme, more basil, cinnamon… whatever sounds yummy! For a full cracker-making tutorial with pictures (sorry, my camera is still broken!) head over HERE.

What do you make from scratch instead of buying? Feel free to leave any recipes or links to recipes in the comments section!

How wonderful that your children are at the age that they love what you make. Mine are grown and the Grandkids are 20 and 21. Oh well, I had my time now it is yours. Cecile

Thanks for linking to my post about making crackers! It was an experiment I've been planning to repeat but haven't, and your post just might have given me the incentive I needed! I make a lot of things from scratch instead of buying, because I don't trust all the crazy stuff the food industry adds to their products. I bake bread about once a week, make my own marinara (most of the time), and just last weekend I made apple butter that will last me all year. I'm starting to think about making my own cheese, but I suspect that will not be a regular thing for me. :-)
