Here are my top gift picks for 5-12 year old boys for 2013! My goal is to find gifts that will actually be used and not just end up on a shelf in the playroom (or lost under a couch!) Hopefully this is helpful as you pick out gifts for the boys in your life this holiday season!
My 8 year old boy got a set of Snap Circuits last year and he STILL plays with it. You can make over 100 different products with just the Jr. set (they have many different options available) including a burglar alarm, doorbell and more!!
My 8 year old boy loves Mindcraft, so this is a great way to get him off of his device and building in real-life! There are several different Mindcraft LEGO options too so you can easily find one that your kid will love.
This toy would be a hit for kids of all ages (including the 35 year olds!) I just highly recommend getting extra cartridges and Nerf bullets because you go through them really quickly!
This is such a fun game and great for all ages. You can play a demo of the game here.
The LeapPad Explorer Tablets have been super hot items the past couple of years. You were lucky to just find one in stock, much less actually find a good deal on one. Last year, Leapfrog introduced the LeapPad2 Explorer and there are definitely some nice upgrades from the first version! For one, the speed is much faster than the original (which was pretty slow). It also has front AND back camera/video recorders so that’s a nice touch for kids to experiment with! This year, LeapFrog introduced the LeapPad Power which *finally* comes with a rechargeable battery!!
When I first opened this one I was pretty skeptical. Why in the world would you need to wear a headband with lights in order to throw a football? But it was actually really fun for the whole family to play with! The football has white lines on it and the headgear with lights that you wear on your head makes the white lines visible in the dark as the ball flies at you!
This is one of the items that we are looking at possibly getting for the kids this year (along with all of the body protection that would have to go along with it!) This one has GREAT reviews and is recommended for ages 8 and up. If you have a younger one who is wanting something similar, try the Street Surfin Whiplash Scooter.
What boy wouldn’t want to make his own Hot Wheels cars? This one has great reviews overall and it gives verbal instructions to the kids as they make the car.
This one would be a fun stocking stuffer! I love the games like this that are fun for the kids to play and are educational too. The age on it is 8 and up, but I think it would be great for the 5-7 age range as well.
Have you tried Orbs yet? They are perfect for when you need a little break and want an activity that will keep the kids occupied for hours! They carefully have to stick the cube onto the number that it goes with, and when they are done they have created a beautiful picture! I would say this is mostly for 9 and under, but there might be some older kids who would love it too!
This one is probably the best toy that you will ever buy. We were introduced to these blocks when my oldest (now 10) was around 2. A friend had them for her children and they showed us all of the amazing structures that you can build with just these small rectangular blocks. It’s truly incredible! The blocks get their imagination going and the possibilities of what you can build with them are endless. Don’t be surprised if you end up building with them after the kids are in bed! 🙂
Blokus is a fun strategy board game for the whole family! It’s easy to understand the rules which makes it fun for the younger kids, and there are endless strategies to master the game which makes it fun for the older kids and adults. I also love that you can play it by yourself, or you can play with up to 4 people. In my opinion it’s the best family board game out there!
Is anyone else tired of the massive amounts of paper that your children want to bring on car trips to color on? Or is that just my kids? The Boogie Board is basically an expensive Magna-Doodle for older kids, but I was impressed enough with it to add it here. My kids thought it was the greatest idea ever and begged to get one (even though they had ditched their Magna-Doodle before Kindergarten!) I haven’t seen anything out there like it yet and I think it would be a very well-received gift for any 5-12 year old.
