Maybe we’re crazy.
But it has been a dream of ours for several years now to pack our family up in an RV and take homeschooling on the road. Yes, with four kids. Did I mention that we might be a little crazy?
Ryan and I both work from home, we homeschool, and we love to travel… so why not? Sounds like it would all just go together really well.
And if we absolutely hate it, then we would have a nice portable house to go camping in!
So what’s standing in our way?
Well, for one, money. We have two houses (one rental property and the house that we currently live in) that we would need to sell before embarking on this insane adventure. Although with the housing market the way it is, we might just put our current house up for rent and continue renting out our other rental property (the one that completely drained us of our savings account this past year… but that’s another story for another day).
The second obstacle standing in our way is STUFF!! Lots and lots and lots of stuff. We have kids, and we work from home, and we homeschool. Stuff just collects. And I think, maybe I will need this one day. Maybe next year. Maybe 10 years from now. But one day when I need it I will have it. When in reality, I probably will never need that item. And if I did need it, it’s VERY likely that I wouldn’t be able to find it and would have to buy that item again anyway!!
We can’t do very much about the first problem other than work towards getting our current house ready to either sell or rent out. But we CAN do something about the second. And that’s what I wanted to share with you guys. Maybe even post about our progress if it’s something y’all would be interested in.
My goal is to get our house “RV ready”. Which, for us, means that we will only keep what we can either bring with us in the RV or what we can fit into one large storage unit. And we have A LOT more than one storage unit worth of stuff.
So I am going to be tackling each room of the house one by one to get rid of the stuff that we do not need and/or do not want to store for when we move into a new house (because, before you ask, we are NOT planning on living in an RV forever… just a year or so). :)
It’s a little daunting but it really needs to be done and who better than you guys to keep me accountable to do it!!
Even if we don’t end up being able to do the RV thing (there’s still the whole money issue), we will have a much MUCH simpler household, which will be absolutely wonderful!!
For those who have done the same thing, or who have looked into it, I’d love your thoughts!!

I am going to have to read this. We travel full time and have been in a motel but are getting ready to get the camper ready.
I have not lived in an RV, but I did homeschool in a Big Rig for 6 months with one K and one 3rd grader. It would have been longer but I fell from the truck. It was def. interesting.
have wanted to do this but on a sailboat or catamaran
A little bit of both! I only have three kids, and maybe they are just more rambunctious than I am really prepared for, and while a mini getaway sounds appealing, I can’t imagine how my sanity would fare making a year long trip of it! But if you have a bit more patience than me, sounds like fun, sounds like a plan! Good luck!
