Natural Home Remedies For Heartburn

The only time I deal with heartburn is when I’m pregnant, but I remember well how miserable it is when it strikes!

If you don’t want to go the over-the-counter drug route, then you might want to try some of these natural remedies at home first.

Ways to Avoid Heartburn

  • Avoid trigger foods such as chocolate, citrus fruit, spicy foods, tomatoes, etc.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and citrus juice.
  • Extra weight also plays a factor in incidents of heartburn.
  • Eat smaller and more frequent meals.
  • Wait a few hours before going to bed after eating.
  • Sleep with your head elevated.
  • Stress causes heartburn so try relaxation methods (Peace & Calming essential oil blend is a favorite of mine!)

Natural Home Remedies for Heartburn

Ginger For Heartburn Relief

Consumed raw, cooked, or as a tea, Ginger is one of the oldest treatments for heartburn or nausea.

Tumeric For Heartburn Relief

Turmeric stimulates digestion and can help to prevent acid build up.  You can add it to your foods as a spice or take in capsule form before eating.  Tumeric is also a natural anti-inflammatory and so is helpful for all kinds of issues!

Aloe Vera Juice For Heartburn

Aloe Vera Juice soothes the esophagus and can help to relieve heartburn, but only use it if it’s formulated for internal use.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Heartburn

Apple Cider Vinegar is not only good for you in general, but can help to reduce heartburn.  Some are brave enough to take a shot of it straight, but you might want to dilute it in water first.

Bananas For Heartburn

Bananas are a natural antacid.  I’ve read several reports from people who have said that a banana really helped their heartburn and then others who said that the bananas actually made it worse… it’s worth a shot though!

Baking Soda In Water For Heartburn

Mix a teaspoon with an 8 oz glass of water and drink it to help settle your stomach.

Essential OIls For Heartburn Relief

Peppermint essential oil and lemon essential oil are both known for helping to sooth the stomach and prevent heartburn and bloating after eating.  As long as you have an essential oil that’s safe for internal use then you can add a drop or two to a glass of water to drink before your meals.

How To Make A Garlic Poultice

Monday

One of the natural remedies that I use when someone in my family is sick is garlic! Garlic is known to have strong antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties… and there are no known side effects (other than smelling like garlic!) :)

The most used garlic remedy in our household is a garlic poultice. It’s super easy to make and very effective! We use it on everyone (babies and adults) and it has helped to reduce fevers and to get rid of coughs & congestion.

Here’s how to make one:

Get a few paper towels or a cheesecloth and lay it on the counter.

garlicpressgarlicpressedintopapertowel
Crush or mince a few cloves of garlic into the middle of the paper towel or cheesecloth.

garlic-secondfold
Fold the paper towel or cheesecloth to cover the garlic area.

garlic in water
Get the paper towel or cheesecloth wet with hot water (but NOT boiling).

Then put the wet garlic poutice on whatever area is bothering you. For example, if you have a cough/congestion then you would put it on your chest. You can also put it on the bottoms of your feet if the smell bothers you. Just make sure you don’t leave it on too long (more than around 90 seconds) because garlic can eventually cause burns since it’s so strong.

Do you use garlic when your family is sick? What are some other ways you’ve found garlic to be helpful?

Activated Charcoal to Get Rid Of The Stomach Flu

Tuesday

I wrote a post a couple of years ago titled “Surviving The Stomach Bug.” And, with LOTS of stomach bug cases going around I thought I would repost it for you guys. Activated Charcoal has been such a great help for our family! We typically don’t give it to our two youngest kids (it stains anything that it gets on), but Ryan, our older two (who are currently 10 and 7), and I always take it whenever we get that stomach-bug feeling in the pit of our stomach.

We all know the feeling. You wake up at 2:30 in the morning with a pain in your stomach. You think to yourself, “If I can just go back to sleep it will go away.” But you can’t, and it doesn’t. You finally drag yourself to the bathroom (hopefully) where you successfully empty the previous night’s dinner.

Ahh… now you feel better. You crawl back into bed and drift back to sleep, only to awaken 30 minutes later with that same pain in your stomach. And you go through the cycle again.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to avoid this cycle?

We have found a way that works for our family!!

We always keep a few bottles of Activated Charcoal on hand for whenever one of us starts to get that “uh oh” feeling in our stomach. If we catch it soon enough, we can take 10-12 Activated Charcoal capsules and it almost always goes away. If we don’t catch it soon enough then we still take the charcoal, but we might still have to head to the bathroom (only once or twice though, instead of 4-8 times).

We also take activated charcoal internally for any food poisoning (thankfully we haven’t had to use it for this very often!), and we always take it with us camping or anytime we go hiking to have it on hand just in case we get a spider or snake bite.  It pulls out toxins when it’s wet and applied to the skin (pretty neat, huh?)  And obviously if we had a poisonous snake bite we would head to the hospital immediately, but we would apply the activated charcoal on the way there.  :)

Activated Charcoal has saved us MANY trips to the doctor, and who knows how much money in prescriptions.

**As mentioned in the comments below, please be very careful about the timing of taking activated charcoal if you are currently taking other medications. It is always recommended to talk to your doctor first.**

You can get Activated Charcoal at your local health food store or you can find Activated Charcoal on Amazon (typically for much less than in the store).

Homemade Coconut Oil Body Butter

Jul

Saturday

You guys probably know by now that I am a HUGE fan of Coconut Oil. I use it in my homemade tortillas, as a deodorant, to pop popcorn, in baking, and as a moisturizer.

For those who may not be familiar with coconut oil, it changes consistency based on the temperature. So if the temp in the house (or the pantry) is BELOW 76 degrees then the coconut oil will remain solid. If it’s HIGHER than 76 degrees it starts to turn into a liquid. Here in Texas the coconut oil is fine most of the year. We keep the temperature during the fall, winter, and spring in our house at a place where my coconut oil is either completely hard, or just soft enough to be able to scoop it out easily (when it’s hard you can just melt it for a few seconds in the microwave to soften it up some).

Follow me on Pinterest!

But then summer comes around. And it is HOT here in Texas. First off, we don’t want our electricity bill to be through the roof, so we don’t turn the air way down during the day (it stays on 78). And secondly, even if we did turn it down it probably wouldn’t get down below 77 in the house because it is just SO HOT OUTSIDE and the air conditioner would be running constantly just to get it down below 78!

So what happens? My nice white jar of coconut oil turns into a pool of liquid. Which is actually great for baking, but not so great for using it as a skin moisturizer. I mean… it WORKS as a moisturizer when it’s a liquid, but it’s just a lot easier to put on your skin when it’s in a firmer state.

What to do, what to do.

Whip it!! You know, the same way that you would whip cream? Just like cream stays at a better consistency to spread when it’s whipped – SO DOES COCONUT OIL! Who knew?!

So here’s what I do now:

Homemade Coconut Oil Body Butter

Author:

Ingredients

Instructions
  1. Put the coconut oil in your mixer with the whipping attachment.
  2. Mix at the highest setting for about 10 minutes (or until it is whipped very very well).
  3. Towards the end of the process, add in your drops of essential oils (you can get them from any health food store or online – see links below).

Now keep in mind that your skin is typically 98.6 degrees.  So as soon as that coconut oil comes into contact with your skin (no matter what state it’s in) it will turn to liquid very quickly.  But this process makes it SO much easier to put on in the summer.  And you still get the benefit of using a moisturizer where you know every single ingredient that goes into it!  :)

It has been WONDERFUL for my dry & cracked heels on my feet (anyone else get dry heels during the summer?) I just apply this every night before bed and my heels are nice and smooth again.  I’ve also just started putting it every night on my knees to get rid of those darker/rougher patches and they have already started to clear up.

I just have the mixture in a little mason jar by my bed and it stays perfectly creamy and smooth all the time.

How To Get Rid Of A Sinus Infection! (Or, at least, how *I* got rid of mine!) :)

In the past couple of years I’ve gotten rid of pretty much ALL chemical cleaners in our house. All of a sudden I started to get sinus infections pretty often and they always happened within hours (sometimes within minutes) of using a chemical-based cleaning product from a spray bottle.

And y’all… sinus infections are AWFUL. You can’t breathe, you can’t sleep because you can’t breathe, you can’t talk, you walk around in fear that you are going to embarrass yourself with major nasal drippage. Like I said, awful.

Well, I decided one day to just completely throw out any non-natural cleaners. Yes, ALL of the ones that I had gotten for free too. And I have to say it was COMPLETELY WORTH IT!

And I never deal with sinus infections anymore!

Well, unless, like this past weekend, I’m around chemical spray cleaners.

Benefits of Wild Oregano Oil {Survival Tip Tuesday}

Jan

Tuesday

A couple of months ago I was driving up to North Dallas with a friend of mine to go to a book signing by the author of one of my favorite blogs, Cake Wrecks!! Seriously, go read it! Jen (the author) is hilarious!

On the way I felt a tickle in my throat, and by the time we got up to our exit it was more than a tickle… it was definitely a sore throat.

I told my friend how I was feeling and she told me how whenever she starts to get a sore throat she takes Wild Oregano Oil and it always makes it better.

You guys know how much I love natural remedies, so I figured I would try it. We just so happened to pass a Vitamin Shoppe on the way so I made a quick stop to see if they had any Wild Oregano Oil and they DID!

I immediately took 3 capsules and within an hour or so my throat had completely stopped hurting.

I’ve had the same thing happen a few other times since then, have taken around 3 capsules each time, and again it completely goes away.

Since then I’ve done a little more research on Oregano Oil and it turns out that it is a potent antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic oil. And it has been used effectively for skin infections, digestive problems, sinus congestion, and colds and sore throats for many many years.

Now, I’m definitely not saying that it would work every time. And I’m not giving ANY medical advice at all whatsoever (of course you should always contact your doctor before taking anything).

But it really might be worth a try!

This is the one that I’ve been using (Source Naturals) and I’ve been very happy with it. AND, the price right now on Amazon is pretty awesome!! (I have no idea what the 1 reviewer there is talking about though… I don’t think it has an aftertaste at all).

Have you tried Oil Of Oregano before? I’d love to hear your experiences too!

***PLEASE read this article on the Livestrong community if you are pregnant, or might become pregnant before taking any oregano oil!***
