Walgreens Trip on 3/8 – 92.4% Savings!

March 8, 2009 · 21 comments

The first Walgreens that I went to this afternoon was completely cleared out of everything, but the second one that I tried had TONS of stuff!! The only thing that I cleared them out of was Dove soap (there were only 8 left). I started off with $10 in Register Rewards that I got last week, and I did three transactions to get everything pictured.

You can find the coupon matchups for these deals HERE.

Transaction 1:

2 tubs of Smart Balance
3 packs of Gentle Care Huggies (Our youngest is in a size 4, but these smaller sizes are great to have for baby showers!)
Starbucks Chai Truffles (I couldn’t resist – they were only $1 after coupons!)
2 Boxes of Sambucol
2 Glade Sense and Sprays
Edge Shave Gel
2 Candy Bars (so that I wouldn’t have more coupons than products)

——————-
Total before coupons: $95.31

- $78.64 in coupons and advertised savings
(NOTE: There is a printable coupon for Sambucol that when used with the Walgreens Instant Value Coupon in the March Easy Saver Book makes it a $4 money-maker!!)
- $10 in Register Rewards from last week

$6.67 total OOP

Got back $10 in Register Rewards (the Edge Shave gel was supposed to give back $1 Register Rewards, but it didn’t print, so they just took it off my next order)

Transaction 2:

8 Dove soaps
Sambucol
Two bags of Starbucks

——————-
Total before coupons: $32.57

- 22.00 coupons
- $10 RR from trans. 1

57¢ total OOP

Got back $10 Register Rewards (for the Dove soap)

Transaction 3:

2 Smart Balance
2 Glade Sense and Spray
2 Sambucol
3 Huggies Natural Fit
3 Orbitz Gum
Edge Shave Gel

——————–
Total before coupons: $84.19

- $66.33 in coupons and weekly ad savings
- $10 Register Rewards from Transaction 2

$7.86 Total OOP

Got back $10 in Register Rewards to use next time

Grand Total before coupons: $212.07

Total OOP Spent: $16.10

Percent Saved: 92.4%!!!!!

Kori,

I didn’t use a coupon on the Dove. The Dove deal is a month-long deal. I got the Sambucol to offset the cost (since it’s a money-maker). I needed to do the Dove deal in the middle of the diaper deals (since you can’t roll the RR like you can the ECBs at CVS on the same item.)

I also didn’t get my $1 RR for the shave gel (I bought the women’s kind, though). I didn’t notice until I was driving away though so I didn’t get to say anything about it. I thought about just returning the shave gel (since I have five at home already!) but since the deals were so great this week I thought I’d cut Walgreens a break and actually PAY for something for once. :) I want to them to stay in business.

This is awesome! I’ve done well this week, but not this well!
How does the Sambucol work as a moneymaker? I have the online coupon and the ESR, but in my store in Chicago it has a shelf price of 13.99. Is it cheaper in your area or am I missing something? Thanks!!

Alli,

Yeah, the Sambucol was priced at $10.99 at my Wags! I was so excited! I went prepared to just get a couple of boxes for free, but had to redo my scenarios when I saw that they were a money-maker!

That is great! Things here tend to run higher priced. Our travel stuff is even $1.29. We do have good pizza, though… :)

You make me want to be a fan of wags, I just have never found the time. Maybe I should this week!

Do you have to get to the store early in the AM on Sunday to get the deals? By 10AM, my two closest Wags were out of Sambucol, have been out of Dove all week, and I’ve never been able to find the Starbucks coupons. It’s frustrating, but there must be a lot of savvy shoppers around here!

I just got home from Walgreens.. did the Huggies buy $25/get $10 in RR.. and because it was LESS than $25 AFTER coupons, the RR didn’t print out! So, I went and got a 4th pack of diapers.. used another coupon, and my total was $26.60, and I got the RR… The manager said it won’t print off the RR when you use coupons to make it go under the $25, because that is “double dipping”. I need to find a new Walgreens to shop at.

I have a question. I went to Walgreens yesterday for the first time and it was a total mess. They didn't want to scan my J&J MQ and the Coloring Book Q. Then, on my second transaction I wanted to use the $10RR that I earned and the cashier kept saying it wouldn't take it. I had to add one more item each time till I got up to over $5 before it would take it. He said I had to make the total balance less the RR over the tax amount. Does that make sense? Have you ever had this prob? I need a new Walgreens with friendly people.

How do you come up with scenerios in order to spend less oop? I get overwhelmed with trying to figure that part out (and you said you did it in the store!).

Thanks for the breakdown! I picked up the Sambucol but it was $13.99, so I didn’t make anything off it. The first Walgreens I went to gave me a hard time on every coupon I had that was over. In fact, they even fought me on the extra penny I got for the Sambucol. I went to a second Walgreens to get the deals that I would have had surplus on, and they gave me no problems. I just had to get some candy to make sure it all covered, and I paid the tax. I wish I had gone there first! Ah well. I did get 4 free hair care products, and a few other freebies out of it, so I guess I can’t complain too much. :-) Also, my first Walgreens wouldn’t let me use a coupon on the second of the BOGO deals :-(
